When I’m thriting or at antique fairs I normally end up seeking out and buying mostly camera and photography related type items so today I thought I’d share some of my ‘girly thrift’. I know girly might be considered a stereotypical nonexclusive word but I was looking for a broad term that included all the little nick nacks I have around the house for no other reason than they are cute. Anyways, starting off are my retro kitty porcelain salt and pepper shakers and cat figure that I adore.
My balcony this autumn has turned into the most wonderful showcase of changing leaf colour, or at least I think so. I was so captured by it that I spent nearly an hour outside just enjoying the breeze, finding color combinations and spending time with Butter. My own overgrown secret garden as I like to think of it.
It has been forever since I last did a Things That Make Me Smile post, so it feels really good to do one this week and going through the last few weeks of my photos. I decided not to share anything from the beginning of July while I was on vacation in Vancouver because I will probably put that all together into one post in the future (fyi I get a lot of anxiety about trips so I usually don’t like to go through the photos until some time has past but I promise I will share more as the weeks go on).
The vines on my balcony grow so much during summer but this year it feels extra magical for some reason. Maybe because it reminds me of the Secret Garden, which was one of my favourite childhood books.
The Sailor Moon figurine I bought while in Vancouver from a comic book store. I am way too much of a cheapass to appreciate the mystery of a blind box figurine but luckily I got the one I wanted the most with just one box.
Since me and Victor arrived back in Vancouver we’ve been obsessed with the idea of Japanese candy since we ate so much while there. We finally got around to checking out to see if our local stores had the same candy and we found a bunch of new stuff and a few of the same.
An original piece from Starchild Stela, and her newest zine.
My beyond cute birthday present that I got from my friend Nicole while visiting Vancouver. You know those presents that you get that you love but it’s something you would never have thought of yourself – this book is totally that. She also got me a million and one rolls of tape in different patterns.
My collection of summer sandals. I honestly hadn’t bought a pair of shoes in a year and then went crazy in July and bought 5 pairs on sale. My favourite pair is the sandals with the black and white stripes mixed with the flower pattern, so cute. Also check out my first ever platforms, they are amazing but I think I over estimated my ability to walk in them.
Lastly, I smile every time I see the K+V outside of my apartment on the pavement especially when taking photos of me and Victor’s new shoes. I know it’s very juvenile to scrap your name into wet cement but after 6 months of continuous building outside of my window every day while the city ripped up the road I didn’t really care.
Going plant shopping, and these goth fucking flowers.
(more flowers photos from Atwater Marche here)
Me and Victor wanted to go on farther bike rides so randomly one day we headed to Lachine which is on the south side of Montreal island and biked around the edge. It took us about 3 hours as we stopped a lot and got lost. The weather was poor that day so I didn’t take many photos but I loved these two.
During the months of June to August every first Friday of the month they have a food cart night at the Olympic Stadium. Some our favourites for going in June was the Polish sausage on a stick (sooo good) and Polish fruit drink.
A bunch of random photos from various walks around the Plateau and other areas of Montreal. That elephant statue by the way is $200 – and I really want it even though who would spend that kind of money on a disco ball elephant? Also the ice cream in the last photo is Korean and suppose to be a shark, it’s really really good so if you can find I highly recommend it.
Lets end this very long Things That Make Me Smile with a self-portrait of myself after dying the tips of my hair purple (the camera tells lies, this is way more purple in person). Being bright and colorful always makes me smile.
Another Things that Make Me Smile post this month because the last one was a special one just for Easter. It’s been a really random month so these photos are all over the place. I can’t believe we are almost finished, April went by way too quickly for me. I guess being bedridden didn’t help, anyways here are the some of things that had me grinning ear to ear…
My friend Billy (Starchild Stela) gave me one of her adorable shrink pieces. If you like you can check out her store where she has plenty.
Star Trek engraved wood pieces I’m going to DIY into brooches and the newest zine from an artist I love Funnyskullgrin (Ally Burke).
Today I needed a day off, so I’m just going to share with you two Instax Mini photos from me and Victor’s first walk of spring. Yup, it’s finally warm enough to walk around Montreal and I couldn’t be happier about it. This Sunday we decided to enjoy the fresh air and go to my favourite bakery to buy almond croissants and sit in Parc Laurier. The parc btw had no leaves on any of the trees, brown grass and snow patches scattered about and was still packed with every hipster parent and their kids because I think everyone was just so happy. It was nice. Yesterday also marked the first day in over 2 weeks were I haven’t been suffering from symptoms of my concussion, so I’m having a pretty great week all things considered. I’m also a good week behind on the blog because of not being able to really do work for the past 2 weeks so that’s why today’s post is super short. Sorry! I do have a really fun post for tmr about what I’m currently reading. (I love the Little Twin Star Instax Mini film, so adorable)
This is a special ‘Things That Make Me Smile’ post for this wonderful Easter Sunday. Even though I’m an atheist it’s my favourite holiday to go all out on (beside Halloween but that’s a given). I mentioned it every year how I grew up with quiet an extravagant amount of Easter festivities and tradition. My grandmother on my father’s side of the family grew up in a farming community that mostly consisted of Polish/Ukrainian families so her Germany family adopted their traditions. Easter to them is big holiday. So even though I don’t celebrate the religious side of it like Lent I do enjoy decorating my house with bunnies, having an Easter tree made of pussywillows, dying eggs, and displaying my array of handmade designed Easter eggs, plus chocolate (who could forget the chocolate). It’s all rather strange, but then again I’m rather strange.
This year’s Easter display. I didn’t end up getting an Easter tree this year because of health issues related to my concussion which meant I was home bound for the last week. Instead I have my coffee table which has been decorated all month with our Easter goodies, and various decor. I love these giant Easter eggs I found at Dollarama.
Trying out something new and being blown away by the results. These are stunning, I honestly had to stop myself from doing more (I already decorated 2 dozen). They are really fun and the natural dye is surprisingly fun to experiment with.
DIY of them here.
Pick of the Week: Pony People
This week’s pick is the Etsy store Pony People who make brooches, stickers and original artwork. I just had to pick up some of their cat brooches at the start of summer especially because the cute grey cat reminds me so much of my own cat Butter. Who can resist a cute grey cat brooch, let alone a flower cat brooch? I just love the creativity and they match my summer dresses so well. They sent with the brooches a free postcard and some stickers that are really cool. Check out more photos below of the brooches and extras!
a few of my favourite items:
Butter has one of the cutest little noses I’ve ever seen on a cat. Her little spots just make me want to boob them (which I would never do so no hate mail). These photos of Butter are my way of cheering me up because I am not only exhausted but I have an ear infection after just getting over a cold. Real talk, I’ve had a really draining week. I’ve been having really weird waves of depression hit which I think are being caused by my body feeling not so great and lack of sleep. But it’s kind of hit me from left field and I’ve been spending way too much time listening to Drake thinking about really weird times in my life at 3am when I should be sleep. Lol. Working till midnight never ends well as I need to distress a lot after work or I can’t sleep. Hoping on the weekend I can cheer myself up and start out next week with a fresh start. I don’t take any medication for my depression and instead just try and go with the flow. Even though I’ve battled with it for 15 years I never seem equipped to make it go away on its own. After it’s over or on during the day when my head is clearer I feel like I’ve lost so much time. I’m just excited my schedule next week is mostly day shifts and I have a long weekend next week. Really hope you’re feeling great and don’t have to work this weekend. Be prepared because I have two new posts I’ll be doing in April that I’m really excited for.
We are getting to the 2nd last Butter of the Week, man I will miss it when it’s gone. I don’t know about you but I love looking at Butter’s majestic fluff. She is just too adorable not to take insane amount of photos of (no just me? okay…). I am very excited to have Friday’s be dedicated to weekly photos instead though. It’ll be a great way to keep up with taking daily photos without having the pressure of a 365 Challenge. This week I’ve actually taken a brief break from taking any photos because I’ve been sick for the 5th time this winter and just feel exhausted and in need relaxation. You’ll notice I didn’t post on Wednesday and that’s because I just needed one day off as I’ve spent every day this week lying in bed feeling awful or at work feeling awful. Besides being sick not much has happened except I’ve read all my Fables comics and am dying to get the next two deluxe editions in the mail so I can continue reading the series. I am willing to admit I am obsessed with the comic to the point I don’t know what I’ll do when I run out of deluxe editions to buy (they go up to comic 70 however the series has a lot more comics that haven’t been bundled in this hardcover deluxe editions – even worse after I get the two I just ordered I only have 1 left). So if you know a great online site for reading comic let me know! I am hoping that I manage to get lots of work done to make up for the last week of slacking and maybe even paint a part of the house if I’m feeling up to it this weekend. Hope you have a great weekend and enjoying the first weekend of Spring!
