Pick of the Week: Gemma Flack

gemma flack (1)Pick of the Week: Gemma Flack

This week’s pick is Gemma Flack’s whose store is filled with artwork, zines, stickers and more. I was really excited to pick up a few things from her after finding out about her through the Bablien zine and finally did last month. The items I was most excited about was her zines ‘It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to exist’ and ‘Imaginary Girl Bands’. I am in love with Imaginary Girl Bands as I love the names and the story behind each band along with the accompanying artwork. The zine ‘It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to exist’ although nice felt a bit sparse to me and didn’t seem to be as thematic. The highlight of the zine was any page that had her portrait drawings on them and the a pressed flower one. I also picked up a pack of temporary tattoos that are just really unique and fun. Overall I love everything and the package arrived quickly not to mention each item was reasonable priced. I am interested in seeing what she does for future zines and will buying from her again (I either didn’t notice or they are new, but her sticker packs are super cute). Below I have detailed photos of each item and the packaging. If you want to find out more about Gemma you can check out her website or store !

I tested them out and they are easy to apply and the colors are really vibrant, which I love. It’s a transfer though and not a true tattoo so it’s one big sheet of film which for me got wrinkly very quickly from movement. gemma flack (10)gemma flack (12)A sneak peak at the zines and below is her mini print business card and free stickers that came with the zine. gemma flack (4)

Pick of the Week: Mab Graves

Pick of the Week: Mab Graves

This week’s pick is artist Mab Graves’ Etsy store which is filled with all kinds of wonderful and whimsical goodies.  She sells prints, cards,  and more but what I love the most is her paper dolls. Her artwork and paper dolls are heavy influenced by Blythe dolls (which I love) and have this cute vibe with a sinister twist. It’s an amazing combination and I’m so happy to have picked up some of her work. I like collecting interesting paper dolls so I picked up her paper doll book which was so much larger and better quality than I expected. It was published by Dover Books so it’s the quality you’d expect of any commercial paper dolls book. My only compliment which I usually make about paper doll books is that you have to cut them out ourselves (also there is not cutting guide) but the paper is sturdy and the pages are single sided which is great. There is just so much variety with the various dolls, animal companions and outfits – it’s like having paper Blythe dolls with extra whimsy. Love them so much. I also picked up a few of her cards to give to friends and perhaps to use as mini prints and they are great quality as well. Each came with a pink envelope and I also got a free card and bookmark with my purchase which was very nice. I have a few detail photos of the items below and if you want to check out her main website, click here!

Pick of the Week: Needlings

needlings dollPick of the Week: Needlings

This week’s pick is the fun and colorful company Needlings run by Hamilton artist Heather Saunders. She makes cute and colorful plush creatures by hand and I happened to run across her creations while on vacation in Toronto. I just had to pick one up for myself and one for my best friend (mine is the green one because it reminded me of Invader Zim). I always enjoy homemade plushies for some reason and hers are really darling. She also runs a super cute website/blog that you can check out as well. I like to just have mine hang out by my record player, photo below!

Pick of the Week: Beauxoxo

Pick of the Week: Beauxoxo

This week’s pick is the UK store Beauxoxo which specializes in homemade hair accessories like headbands, turbans, bows and plenty of other hair accessories. I just love this shop and all the accessoires are hand made by the owner Gerogie. For summer I knew I had to have some new accessories to wear with all my summer dress so I picked up a turban, flower crown and a wire headband to try out. Her store has a huge selection so if you don’t like my color combinations or fabric picks – trust me she has a design you’d love. The best thing about her store is that you can request a custom size, which for me is amazing because I have a little bit of a big head and I also get headaches if things press against my head too much so this really sold me.  Even with the custom size request I was surprised with how quickly I recieved everything and the amount of care put into it. Mine came in a huge box so there was no way my crown was getting smushed in transit. For the actually accessories themselves I thought overall that each piece was worth the price and really well made. The wire headband is actually exactly like the one I bought from Mod Cloth maybe even better since the wire is a bit stiffer so it holds its shape better.  The fabric also looked exactly like it did online. I am really happy with the fabric turban as well. My only disappointment really was the flower crown, the leaf ribbon detail in photos looked much better than it does in person. The ribbon just comes off as very cheap and very shiny, it’s really stands out on an otherwise beautiful flower crown. It’s hard to tell when wearing it in photos though or unless you are looking at it close up so I don’t mind too much. Honestly I’m so pleased with my 3 pieces and just know I’ll buy from Beauxoxo again. Check the store out, it’s so easy to customize a perfect summer outfit with one of her accessories!

Pick of the Week: Mod Lacquer

mod laquer (5)Pick of the Week: Mod Lacquer

I had to make one of my picks this month nail polish as it’s one of my summer essentials, so today’s pick is Mod Lacquer a store dedicated to just that! One of the reasons I decided to pick up nail polish from them over all the nail polish stores on Etsy is because they offer sample sizes which are perfect if you like to have a lot of choice or if you simply want to try a shade out. Buying nail polish on Etsy also is one of those things that make me very nervous since I’m the girl at the store who always tests it first so the smaller sizes are perfect for me because I know I’m not going to waste money and end up with a big bottle of nail polish I will never want to use. Overall each polish lasted a long time and the glitter had good coverage. My one note is that the ones with shaped glitter are super hard to remove; you have to practically scratch the glitter off instead of just using polish removal. I would definitely buy again from these guys though and I love all the variance of polish they over from unique glitter to holographic. I picked 5 different shades and thought I’d give my thoughts on each below with a picture of it on my nails as well…

Technicolor noise: My fav out of the 5– this is a clear base with neon sparkles so you can wear it over any shade of color but I love it with black – it’s awesome. I’ve worn it tons and the neon just pops. I also managed to lose this guy somewhere in my house so no photo but in their business card above you can see it.

Sideshow Review
: I do love the combo of the blue with the pop of yellow but I find that the blue is too clear even after three coats . I wear it with a light shade of blue underneath to help with this issue.

Lavender Festival:
This does not have the same issue as Sideshow Review, the base color of light purple covers the nail well and it’s really cute.

Breaking Mod:
I loved this polish because it looks like mermaid scales. I wish it was a clear polish however, it’s like the other blue and it goes on the nail too light even after 3 coats. It would probably be fine on fake nails but I’m wearing it with a metalic blue behind it.

Hairy Fairy
: Great for when you want to bling up your nails, it’s super reflective which is hard to see in my photo. Again works great on top of any darker polish. I’m wearing it with 2 coats but  a little less cluttered with 1 coat.

Pick of the Week: The Tiny Hobo

Pick of the Week: The Tiny Hobo

This week’s pick is the cute shop The Tiny Hobo which specializes in brooches, and other jewelry. They have a good selection of adorable jewellery that is perfect for the summer and super affordable. Like the cute cactus brooches that I picked up from them which are just beyond awesome. I’ve been wearing mine for weeks now anytime I go out and they are the perfect accessory for the summer I think. Plus I am terrible at actually keeping cactus so at least these don’t need to be watered, lol. Check them out!

Pick of the Week: Boojiboo

Pick of the Week: Boojiboo

This week’s pick is retro and vintage aprongs by Etsy’s store Boojiboo. I found them a few months ago when I was looking to pick up a cute apron for baking. Yes, yes I know aprons are super easy to sew yourself but I don’t own a sewing machine and secondly I have no idea where to find cute fabric. That’s actually why Boojiboo stood out to me when I was looking on Etsy, the fabric. They have some really unique fabrics that have a vintage feel to them that I love. They also have a huge selection and great prices. Another thing I noticed is that every few months or so they have different fabric so there are always fresh choices. One of my favourites got scooped up and hasn’t come back yet so make sure if you see something you like to scoop it up. My hearts apron was my second choice but I love it and it’s really well made. Wanted to share with you guys!

Pick of the Week: Home Decor

I’ve been anticipating April so much for the last few months. It just feels nice to reach 1 year in an apartment I really love and enjoy and don’t think I will grow out of anytime soon. Since arriving in Montreal I’ve lived in 6 different apartments and am just shy of living here for 5 years. That’s a lot of moving, not to mention I’ve had to share my space with roommates in 3 of those places. I feel like I’ve done a good job with starting to working on decorating. So far except our entrance way I’ve painted all the rooms a colour I enjoy (except the kitchen and bathroom which we are leaving white, they others were the most awful beige colour when we arrived). Victor still cannot decide what colour he wants to make his studio but that’s his room to worry about, lol. We have all the furniture I think we’ll need shy of maybe some shelves and I’ve started to decorate the walls with my art prints and my own photography. I defiantly need to spend more time putting up my photography but I’ve wanted to wait until all the rooms were painted as the entrance is the largest wall space and I want to make it a mini gallery since we don’t use the room for anything else. It’s great that after a year I still have so many ways to keep myself busy. Today I thought I’d share some of my dream house decorations I’ve collected over the year from Etsy, some things I may end up getting but most wonderful but expensive things I will just have to dream for.

Pick of the Week: March Treasures

march treasures march treasures 2

There are so many treasures this month, I’ve been spending most of March’s snow days inside and dream shopping on Etsy. Spring is always the time of year I like to get back into being really girly. I buy new outfits, and start getting back into painting my nails and putting on jewelry and make up. Browsing on Etsy is like my warm up.

Pick of the Week: Deth P. Sun

dethpsun (6)Pick of the Week: Deth P. Sun

This week’s pick of the week is illustrator Deth P. Sun from Berkeley, California. His shop features a lot of various items using his drawings like prints, bags, t-shirts and more. My favourite items are the square stickers that feature a cat character who is heavily featured in Sun’s work. I am obsessed with his character and find the adventures he goes on very charming. I picked up from his store almost all of his stickers as well as “They Come at Night” and “Various Drawings 2012” zines. I love the zines and since they’ve arrived I’ve been through them again and again. His illustrations have a very familiar feel but at the same time are distinct. I cannot help but want to know more about his cat and what adventures he may find himself in next.  It also occurred to me that both of these zines are large enough to easy become coloring books (great for kids or big kids like myself who color while bored at work).  I honestly love these and cannot wait to pick up more of his work. I’m thinking about a t-shirt for Victor as they are really awesome and maybe a print for my art wall. If you want to find out more about Deth P. Sun, check out his blog!
