Things That Make Me Smile

October to me is pretty much Halloween all day every day, so this month I’m going to be doing two Things That Make Me Smile posts filled with all the festive things around me. Despite not feeling super up for anything this month, I’ve been having some great moments and enjoying myself because I just can’t be depressed when it’s Fall. So I hope you enjoy my silly collection of photos and I’ll be posting the 2nd one closer to Halloween with more of my decorations and celebrations.

My porch. It’s majestic as all hell right now with the over grown vines just encasing it, not to mention them changing colors and Butter’s adorable expression in the second photo, squeal. I sadly might be trimming the vines soon because while they look amazing, my kitchen is so much darker now that it was in summer and I need all the daylight I can get while the sun setting at 6pm.

things that make me smile (4)Halloween #mtlcranes are here and I love the 90s ‘spooky’ lyrics.

things that make me smile (3)This adorable card I bought for my best friend Ana.

things that make me smile (8)All things from Ally Burke, her style of drawing is just wonderful.
(check her out here)

things that make me smile (6)For Halloween and autumn I wanted to try some new instax film so I picked out these two because I thought they’d be a good fit.

things that make me smile (12)Always having lots of choices when it comes to colors. In fact I used each one of these on my current hair color (no picture of it just yet as I am still in shock how dark it is after being in the pastel game for over a year now – I need to figure out how to present it)

things that make me smileUnicorn socks.

things that make me smile (8) things that make me smile (9)My second ever homemade kawaii/pastelgoth/? phone case. Halloween themed of course, also my DIY for these is posted tmr, or on the weekend so look out for that if your interested.

things that make me smile (7)My front window plants are just exploding everywhere. My air plants also aren’t dead, surprise, surprise!

things that make me smile (10)Stocking up on glitter, the not so fun part was vacuuming the mess I made all over the house while putting these in the bottles.

things that make me smileJust another day captured. It’s been super gloomy outside so my place has turned into a cave or there would be more photos for today’s post. Thought I’d end on this one because it’s silly.

Daiso Haul

One of best moments of my trip to Vancouver, as sad as it may sound was stepping foot into Daiso after years of going without. Daiso for those of you who haven’t been before, is basically a Japanese dollar store. The one in Richmond, British Columbia is huge and makes me feel like I am stepping into Japan for an hour or two (there is just so much to see on it’s huge 3 floors). This was the first time going with my friend Nicole, who has a love and passion for dollar stores of any kind so it was great to go with her and just spent way too much money on such random things and not be judged, lol.  If you are in Vancouver I’d say it’s a must, but my tip is to also check out Yokoyaya123 near downtown as it’s a more condensed store and carries only Diaso products. Anyways thought I’d share my haul…

#mtlcrane – The 90’s

#mtlcrane (4)

Introducing the 2nd year of #mtlcrane, this time dubbed The 90’s which you can follow on Instagram, Flickr and Twitter. I haven’t been talking about it much on here as I’ve been hard at work making all those cranes and didn’t really find the time to go through the photos I’ve already compiled for this year but it’s better late than never (right?). This year is the same concept of last year’s except instead I am leaving unique cranes (meaning their origami pattern paper is 100% unique per each 300+ cranes I will be putting up) with 90’s song lyrics from Ace of Base to Ol’ Dirt’ Bastard and everything else in-between. The big change for this year is I am geotagging each crane so you can actually find them if you are currently in Montreal and follow on Instagram. I usually post their location the same day or next. It’s kind of my version of geocaching and scavenger hunt combined! Sadly due to the weather and being out of town for most of the summer I haven’t been doing it the last two months but I have just started up again and will be doing them over the next few months until the weather prevents me. As well it will carry into next year spring and summer because I’d love to cover at much of Montreal as possible and there are just too many 90’s classic songs to choose from. Like last year I am also doing a selection of Halloween themed cranes that will be done for each day in October with spooky lyrics as a separate thing from the 90’s because I can’t resist celebrating my favourite holiday. I am even in the process of putting together a zine of last year’s 80s crane so I hope to finish that soon and be able to share that. Let me know in the comments what you think about #mtlcane and be sure to check it out, I’ve included some of my favourite photos and locations of the 90’s below!

Side note: my other crane project involving 3,000 cranes has been shelved at the moment until next year. Although I have completed almost the entire amount of cranes I needed there just wasn’t enough good weather the last two seasons to permit a week long or even a half week long outside installation so I halted my work on it until next year as the second part of the project (taking the cranes and stringing them into rows and chains) is very space consuming for my small living space so I need to have an exact installation day to precede. Will talk about it more when I have that date setup in 2016.

Things That Make Me Smile

things that make me smile (7)What better way to start a Things That Make Me Smile post than our new bikes. Seriously in love with my early birthday present.

things that make me smile (1)My air plant is flowering, so pretty.

(more flowers photos from Atwater Marche here)

things that make me smile (13) things that make me smile (14)The succulents that we picked out. I don’t have a good track record with succulents so I hope these don’t end up making me sad. lol.

things that make me smile (15)Butter randomly makes the best unimpressed face.

things that make me smilethings that make me smile (2)Me and Victor wanted to go on farther bike rides so randomly one day we headed to Lachine which is on the south side of Montreal island and biked around the edge. It took us about 3 hours as we stopped a lot and got lost. The weather was poor that day so I didn’t take many photos but I loved these two.

things that make me smile (10)First day at the lake! The water was really cold but that didn’t stop us from spending all our time there swimming.

Random things I bought in June.

things that make me smile (4)Including these Sailor Moon file folders.

things that make me smile (3) things that make me smile (2)After waiting 3 months my gemstone beads finally arrived and I couldn’t be more delighted. Made so many bracelets already and I haven’t even used half of them.

things that make me smile (9)Mural Festival happened earlier in the month and I was mostly disappointed by it this year. However I did find these amazing stickers from Sandra Chevrier.

things that make me smile (5) things that make me smile (6)Sunsets and Sunrises, made even better when Victor or Butter joins me in watching them.

things that make me smile (17)things that make me smile (19)Finishing a package of origami paper always makes me smile but this rainbow pack of 200 only took 1 week so I was extra delighted. Also my front window setup right now is on point.

things that make me smile (12) Found a baby bird hiding behind flowers while out on a walk.

things that make me smile (10)During the months of June to August every first Friday of the month they have a food cart night at the Olympic Stadium. Some our favourites for going in June was the Polish sausage on a stick (sooo good) and Polish fruit drink.

things that make me smile (11)Homemade epsom bath salts that smell like french vanilla, perfect for tired feet from too much walking.

things that make me smile (1) things that make me smile (8)things that make me smile (9) things that make me smile (4)A bunch of random photos from various walks around the Plateau and other areas of Montreal. That elephant statue by the way is $200 – and I really want it even though who would spend that kind of money on a disco ball elephant? Also the ice cream in the last photo is Korean and suppose to be a shark, it’s really really good so if you can find I highly recommend it.

things that make me smile (8)Lets end this very long Things That Make Me Smile with a self-portrait of myself after dying the tips of my hair purple (the camera tells lies, this is way more purple in person). Being bright and colorful always makes me smile.

Things That Make Me Smile

Although it isn’t May any longer I had so many photos that I didn’t have a chance to share so today is going to be May’s Things That Make Me Smile. So sorry about all the uncertainty with posts the last month, there was a security issue that happened mid-month and to ensure there was no issues I had to take the site down. Still working to get it fully back up so you may notice things changing for the next week but I’m trying to finish it as soon as possible. There will be another smile post next week too, so if you like my silly personal photos you are in luck. Hope you enjoy!

He also picked one up for himself so we could ride in style together. So much better than the ancient 2nd hand bikes we’ve had for the past 2 years.

things that make me smile (2)Also these light up alien heads that I bought Victor to go with his bike.

things that make me smile (4) things that make me smileHandsome men and this frog which looks cute and mysterious at the same time.

things that make me smile (2)My homemade vanilla extract (I did a post about making it here). Still letting it ruminate for a bit longer before using but it’s getting so dark now.

things that make me smile (4)Speaking of alcohol, I love sparkling cider and randomly picked this brand up one day from a local depanneur and fell in love. It’s so good, and tastes exactly like the other Quebec sparkling cider I love by Lafrance. This one comes in mini bottles instead of a big bottle though so it’s perfect picnics. I like to call it poor person champagne.

things that make me smile (1)Puffy stickers :)  I promised myself that I wouldn’t buy any more stickers until I whittled away some of my vast collection….but I couldn’t resist.

things that make me smile (2)My best thrift store haul of the year. The Hello Kitty phone was only $4! I really need to spend more time thrifting this summer.

things that make me smile (3)How could I resist these Sailor Moon stickers? (bought from Etsy)

things that make me smile (5)Dino stamps? Such a nerd. Honestly though these are the best.

things that make me smile (1)I am a sucker for pastel origami paper. I’ve been hard at work on my 3,000 crane project. Just reaching over 2,000 this past month after starting in February. I wanted to have it finished by end of June but now I am aiming more for end of July, early August. Let you know more about it closer to the date.

things that make me smile (5)I’ll end today’s post with a sunset, appropriate I thought to say the least. What better to make me smile than a bike ride and picnic ending with a beautiful view and the sound of running water? All I need for heaven on early.

Things That Make Me Smile

Another Things that Make Me Smile post this month because the last one was a special one just for Easter. It’s been a really random month so these photos are all over the place. I can’t believe we are almost finished, April went by way too quickly for me. I guess being bedridden didn’t help, anyways here are the some of things that had me grinning ear to ear…

things that make me smile (1)Origami paper, this set is so vibrant and has that Spring feeling – I love it.

Things That Make Me Smile

This is a special ‘Things That Make Me Smile’ post for this wonderful Easter Sunday. Even though I’m an atheist it’s my favourite holiday to go all out on (beside Halloween but that’s a given). I mentioned it every year how I grew up with quiet an extravagant amount of Easter festivities and tradition. My grandmother on my father’s side of the family grew up in a farming community that mostly consisted of Polish/Ukrainian families so her Germany family adopted their traditions. Easter to them is big holiday. So even though I don’t celebrate the religious side of it like Lent I do enjoy decorating my house with bunnies, having an Easter tree made of pussywillows, dying eggs, and displaying my array of handmade designed Easter eggs, plus chocolate (who could forget the chocolate). It’s all rather strange, but then again I’m rather strange.

My favourite tattoo Easter eggs. The second one is a swimming horse, it’s hard to see but it has bubbles on it’s body and all around. (DIY here, and most of them here)

things that make me smile (2)Making bracelets! One for my friend’s little girl and one for me. Kit Kat is a nickname that one of my co-worker calls me and I think it’s adorable.

things that make me smile (1) things that make me smile (2)This year’s Easter display. I didn’t end up getting an Easter tree this year because of health issues related to my concussion which meant I was home bound for the last week. Instead I have my coffee table which has been decorated all month with our Easter goodies, and various decor. I love these giant Easter eggs I found at Dollarama.

things that make me smile (6)My rainbow collection of jump rings which are for April’s DIY project.

naturally dyed floral easter eggs (37)Trying out something new and being blown away by the results. These are stunning, I honestly had to stop myself from doing more (I already decorated 2 dozen). They are really fun and the natural dye is surprisingly fun to experiment with.

things that make me smile (3)things that make me smile (1)Holiday snail mail! Made these postcards myself with Easter transfers and plenty of stickers.

things that make me smile (5)Easter weekend suffered the same fate as the last month which doesn’t make me smile but I always find it pretty to find a fresh white blanket of snow in the morning.

things that make me smile (1)Oh also these cute St. Patrick Day postards. Wrong holiday but aren’t these stickers adorable?

Things That Make Me Smile

March’s collection of Things That Make Me Smile is bittersweet in a way since a lot of these happen to be about my friend Zara who left me (whaaa) and moved back to the West Coast. She was crazy generous to me when leaving and gifted to me I think a third of her house, lol. I haven’t even had to chance to photograph many of the cool things she’s passed on to me because I’ve been too busy trying to find room. I might now own an amazing antique couch she picked up from an auction on top of everything (it’s also broken so I can’t sit on it but it sure is pretty). I’ve also been working a month straight on my project featuring 3,000 cranes so there is more than one photo of cranes today, hope you don’t mind but that’s my life currently. I’m really excited for March to get into full effect.  My house is slowly getting decorated in bunnies and eggs for Easter and I am buying new bookshelves this month which has me all excited as well. Life feels really good right now, a little stressful but good. Let me know below what made you smile in the last month!

If you’ve never heard of this brand before these markers are high end and 1 marker is sold individually for $8 – she gave me close to a 100 of them…that’s intense. She moved to Vancouver Island very last minute (so sad) and wanted to find a good home for a few of her things.

Christmas DIY: Origami Christmas Card Display & Paper Crane Ornaments

monthly diy christmas origami

Today I wanted to share with you two special Christmas DIY projects that I did this year using origami. The first is how to make a Christmas card display and second is paper crane ornaments.  I missed one of my monthly DIYs in the summer so I thought I’d do an extra one this month and show you these two simple and inexpensive projects. The ornaments are my favourite as they make really cute gifts for friends and family and easy to send along with your Christmas cards. I didn’t even know Christmas origami paper was a thing until this year but I just love the idea of incorporating cranes into my festive decorations. If you can’t find the same origami paper I have I suggest just using regular colored origami paper (double sided is preferable) in the color pallet of your decorations and you can even draw or print your own designs onto the paper as well. As always let me know in the comment if you makes these!

Paper Crane Ornaments

What You’ll Need:monthly diy (1)

  • origami paper
    *any will do
(I bought mine from here and hereavailable on Amazon too)
  • 2-3 spools of thread
    *any color
  •  sewing needle
  • scissors

Time and Cost:

$20 for both projects. For an experienced crane maker you could probably make both the ornaments and display in roughly and hour. If you are not familiar with making them it might take a bit of practice. Continue reading %s

Paper Craft: Desserts

papercraft

I have been a fan of paper crafts and origami for several years but have never done much myself except making origami cranes. So when I saw a kit for making paper desserts at Dollarama I had to try them out. At first the minimalist instructions and the requirement for scissors and glue baffled me but as soon as I started it became really fun. I am delighted with the finished project and want to show you guys! (they are a little beat up, before I could take these photos Butter tried to eat them)
