Things That Make Me Smile

Although it isn’t May any longer I had so many photos that I didn’t have a chance to share so today is going to be May’s Things That Make Me Smile. So sorry about all the uncertainty with posts the last month, there was a security issue that happened mid-month and to ensure there was no issues I had to take the site down. Still working to get it fully back up so you may notice things changing for the next week but I’m trying to finish it as soon as possible. There will be another smile post next week too, so if you like my silly personal photos you are in luck. Hope you enjoy!

He also picked one up for himself so we could ride in style together. So much better than the ancient 2nd hand bikes we’ve had for the past 2 years.

things that make me smile (4)Speaking of alcohol, I love sparkling cider and randomly picked this brand up one day from a local depanneur and fell in love. It’s so good, and tastes exactly like the other Quebec sparkling cider I love by Lafrance. This one comes in mini bottles instead of a big bottle though so it’s perfect picnics. I like to call it poor person champagne.

things that make me smile (1)Puffy stickers :)  I promised myself that I wouldn’t buy any more stickers until I whittled away some of my vast collection….but I couldn’t resist.

things that make me smile (1)I am a sucker for pastel origami paper. I’ve been hard at work on my 3,000 crane project. Just reaching over 2,000 this past month after starting in February. I wanted to have it finished by end of June but now I am aiming more for end of July, early August. Let you know more about it closer to the date.

things that make me smile (5)I’ll end today’s post with a sunset, appropriate I thought to say the least. What better to make me smile than a bike ride and picnic ending with a beautiful view and the sound of running water? All I need for heaven on early.

Things That Make Me Smile

March’s collection of Things That Make Me Smile is bittersweet in a way since a lot of these happen to be about my friend Zara who left me (whaaa) and moved back to the West Coast. She was crazy generous to me when leaving and gifted to me I think a third of her house, lol. I haven’t even had to chance to photograph many of the cool things she’s passed on to me because I’ve been too busy trying to find room. I might now own an amazing antique couch she picked up from an auction on top of everything (it’s also broken so I can’t sit on it but it sure is pretty). I’ve also been working a month straight on my project featuring 3,000 cranes so there is more than one photo of cranes today, hope you don’t mind but that’s my life currently. I’m really excited for March to get into full effect.  My house is slowly getting decorated in bunnies and eggs for Easter and I am buying new bookshelves this month which has me all excited as well. Life feels really good right now, a little stressful but good. Let me know below what made you smile in the last month!

If you’ve never heard of this brand before these markers are high end and 1 marker is sold individually for $8 – she gave me close to a 100 of them…that’s intense. She moved to Vancouver Island very last minute (so sad) and wanted to find a good home for a few of her things.

Zine of the Month: Frights

This week’s pick and zine of the month is local Montreal illustrator Sarah Bourget who does dreamy portraits of women. I fell in love with her pieces the first time I saw them as they remind me a lot of myself (it’s the hair). Instead of unrealistic or idolize interperations, her work features women in modern fashions with hints of scars and emotions that give her illustrations personality. I also love the contrast of harsh black in combination with her pastel color palet. Her work can’t help but intrigue me and I am hoping very much in the future to pick up  more. Her mini zine Frights is a great introduction to her work but she also has stickers, originals and prints available as well. Below will be a look at her zine and more. To picked up prints check out Society6 and the zine, and mini prints are available on Etsy. You can also follow her on Instagram or check out her website for more about her!

Things That Make Me Smile

This month’s things that make me smile is slightly Valentine’s Day themed just a tad as I went a little crazy with my snail mail. I was going to share a bunch of photos from my Toronto trip that happened last weekend but I realized I had so many they really deserved a post of their own. It goes without saying almost everything in Toronto makes me smile…except not sleeping – I never get a lot of sleep when I’m there. Again like last year I don’t really have plans for Valentine’s, it’s just one of those non-holidays but I do enjoy convincing Victor to buy me Lindor chocolate (he is on his usual health food kick so it’s like pulling teeth to get him to contribute to my sugar addiction). I love getting him a card though and sending postcards to friends covered in as many pink hearts as I can find. As always you can always share what you made you smile this month in the comments.

things that make me smile (1)My origami paper case filled to the brim with so many different patterns of paper. I am starting to make 2,000 cranes for future mtlcranes as well as another project I’m keeping huss huss right now.

Pick of the Week: Ally Burke

ally burke (4)Pick of the Week: Ally Burke

This week’s pick is a must for October in preparation for Halloween, artist Ally Burke of deadspiderhands. She’s been a pick twice before but I cannot resist sharing her artwork. I absolutely adore her style and I love the humor of her work. Her shop is primarily prints, stickers, postcards and originals of her twisted portrait illustrations and paintings. She even has a set of special prints, and a zine just for Halloween this year.  I was surprised looking back at my previous posts to see that I had never even shared some of my most beloved pieces of her artwork in my possession. Before I’ve shared some of her postcards and stickers, and a print from Society6 but now I also have 3 original illustrations, a painting, and I even have a commissioned portrait of Victor and me for our 3rd year anniversary. I may pick up even more originals soon as she’s done a few illustrations on dollies that look divine and I’ve been thinking I need a portrait of me and my cat as well (total crazy cat lady, right?)  The experience of working with her on the commission was wonderful and she was more than accommodating to all of my requests and feedback so I’d love to do it again. There isn’t much more I can say as clearly I’m a little entranced with her work but if you need something Halloween themed her shop is great place to look.  If you love her style  I suggest following her on Tumblr or Instagram as well because I find the illustrations of hers I like the most are usually just her everyday sketches that stay in her sketch book.  Here is a look at all the things I have in my little deadspiderhands collections.

Pick of the Week: Love Teacup Kisses

love teacup kisses (1)Pick of the Week: Love Teacup Kisses

This week’s pick is the adorable Etsy store Love Teacup Kisses by illustrator Avo. She sells prints, stickers, brooches, original artwork and more of her adorable illustrations. I just love her artwork. It’s light, fun and super cute. It was impossible for me to resist the stickers with all the colorful hair happening and amazing fashion. I also picked up an original artwork because that “Fuck Off” jacket and hair do just screamed me (she does portraits as well that are really well done – if I wasn’t scared of getting mine done I would in a heartbeat).  She was also super kind and sent me some extra monster stickers with the original – and they are amazing. It’s a great store and she puts a lot of care into each package.  If you want to know more about Avo, she has an adorable blog and posts videos of her process on Youtube that you can check out!

Pick of the Week: LoLL3

Pick of the Week: LoLL3

This week’s pick is the illustrator Loll3 from Italy who has an adorable Etsy store with tons of stickers, brooches and other goodies as well as a Society6 store. Her artwork is super eye catching and has a lot of occult symbolism in it. I enjoy her color pallet the most as I’m a sucker for hot pink and other vibrant colors. I picked from her Etsy store some of her stickers (which are much larger than I thought) and some cards that I thought I could use as mini prints. As well from her Society6 page I bought a mug for a friend and a large print for my art wall. My favourite item for sure beside the print is the cards, they are so cute and I love how she accessorised the card’s envelopes with tiny artwork on the lip. She also has postcards, which if you follow this blog you know postcards are my weakness. I really love all the items and it’s worth checking out both of her stores. You can also check out her tumblr for a closer look at her artwork or updates on future sales.

Pick of the Week: Starchild Stela

This week’s pick is local Montreal graffiti artist Starchild Stela’s store on Storenvy. I first found out about her work through tumblr (follow her: here) and have been in love with her seriously cute work since. Beside graffiti she also makes prints, stickers, mini zines, postcards, and even has a monthly mail subscription for those of you that enjoy snail mail! I love her anti-rape culture sentiment that is in some of her work as not enough artist go there and it is refreshing to see. Beside that though how can you resist the cuteness? Her stuff is amazing quality and I’ve  bought through her store and in person at craft fairs. A great pick if you are look for stickers to add to your collection or prints for your house!

Pick of the Week: Joey Design

Joey designPick of the Week: Joey Design

Today’s pick is the Etsy shop JoeyDesign by self-taught illustrator Danielle Miles. She makes cards and stickers of her illustrations as well as other goodies. I am in love with her stickers, these are seriously cute stickers. Her work is great for kids or adults like me who are just big kids in disguise. I bought unicorn ones as well but sadly didn’t take a photo of them before I used them all on postcards. The stickers seems to last very well, I have one of the unicorns on my laptop and even though it’s not a vinyl sticker after roughly a year it still looks great. Check out her shop if you love fun and bright illustrations.
